Emergency Medical Services
The excitement of responding to emergency situations and the desire to help those in need of urgent critical care compel many people to become emergency medical responders. For these individuals, Enterprise State Community College provides the professional training needed to serve as well-qualified emergency medical technicians and paramedics.
ESCC offers a variety of programs in EMT, advanced EMT and paramedic work. The associate’s degree covers paramedic training, although a short-term certificate is also available in this field of study. Short-term certificates are also available in EMT and A-EMT programs.
Graduates of ESCC’s EMT program will be able to provide pre-hospital health care and perform services such as defibrillation, medication assistance, packaging of trauma patients, and driving an ambulance. The advanced EMT program provides additional training, including administering intravenous fluids and medications. Students can complete these programs in less than a year.
The two-year paramedic program provides even more advanced skills to students. Graduates of the program will have the knowledge necessary to administer drugs orally, subcutaneously, intramuscularly and intravenously, interpret EKGs, perform endotracheal intubations, and use O2 saturation monitors and other complex equipment. Paramedics with an associate’s degree can further improve their skills by becoming registered nurses.
The paramedic program has a prerequisite of Bio 201. Students must also pass a drug screening and background check.
EMT and paramedic work are two careers students can have a bright future here in the Wiregrass. Local demand for EMT and paramedic services is growing as the local population ages and requires increased medical services. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, available jobs for EMTs and paramedics will grow at a fast rate in coming years. Jobs are expected to grow by 24 percent over the next decade.
