Welcome to Online Learning using Canvas at Enterprise State Community College. The online courses are available on the FIRST day of class each semester. Please check the main calendar for that specific date.
The Canvas Learning System is a virtual learning environment and course management system developed by Instructure, Inc. at Enterprise State Community College employs Canvas to provide added online elements to courses traditionally delivered face-to-face and to deliver completely online courses with few or no face-to-face meetings.
Why choose to learn online?Online learning offers students more flexibility than traditional on-campus classes;Students can access course work and submit assignments on their own time schedule - early in the morning or late at night.
The IT Department performs student data uploads (for registered/paid students) twice daily until the last day to drop/add. Please allow 24 hours for registration changes to appear in Canvas.
Cost Associated with Distance Education CoursesStudents who enroll in distance education courses but do not test at Enterprise State Community College campuses or sites may incur an additional cost, a proctoring fee. All proctoring fees are the responsibility of the student.

ESCC offers several classes taught over the Internet. Students enrolled in online courses may participate from anywhere they have access to a computer and the Internet (home, office, library, etc.). For students who have time and location restrictions that cannot be accommodated by traditional classroom instruction, distance learning is an attractive alternative.
On these pages you will find information to help you decide if online instruction fits your learning style. Please follow the links at the left to find answers to your questions. The instructors for many of our online courses have provided detailed sample syllabi to help you determine which online course is right for you.
Remember, in any distance education environment, you must take full responsibility for your own learning. Before you sign up, it would be advisable to discuss the course and its content with the instructor to make sure it is a good fit for you. Instructors of certain online courses may require face-to-face orientation, and in all classes at least one assessment must be taken in person and proctored.
IMPORTANTStudents must check in with their instructor during the first two days of class by Canvas email or Discussion Board.
Once you have registered for your online course and the semester has started, here are your instructions for logging in to your course:

Step 2: Your default password is your 6 digit birthday, mmddyy. If you have changed your student PIN, your Canvas password will be whatever you have changed your PIN to.
effective Spring semester 2014
For a distance education course, a "No-Show" student is one who has never actively participated in the course before the attendance verification deadline. Active participation is defined as completing the Attendance Verification Quiz for each online course in which the student is enrolled, communication between the student and instructor, within the college's learning management system, regarding the subject matter of the course or a related academic matter or completion of a class assignment. The Attendance Verification Quiz must be completed by noon on the 5th day of each semester. Logging in to the course or sending an email is not considered active participation.
ESCC adopts the Department of Education definition of Last Date of Attendance (LDA) for distance education courses. Last Date of Attendance is defined as: “… the last date the student participated in an online discussion or made contact with a faculty member”.
Students who receive a grade of “F” must be assigned a last date of attendance. This date must be the date the student participated in an online discussion or made contact with a faculty member, not the last time the student logged into the course.

Internet BrowsersCanvas recommends using Google Chrome as your internet browser. Mozilla Firefox and Safari are also acceptable.
Respondus LockDown BrowserSome instructors might require the use of Respondus LockDown browser to complete exams. To download the LockDown Browser, click here.
PluginsBe sure to have Adobe Flash Player and Java installed. Click the links below to install these plugins on your computer:

Mobile CapabilitiesCanvas is available as an app on iOS and Android mobile devices. Search the app store for "Canvas by Instructure".
How to send a message to your professor in Canvas
From Canvas, Click the “Inbox” button in the upper right portion of the screen
In the ”TO” box
Click the “People” button
Click the “Arrow”
From the list, Select “Teachers”
Click the teacher’s name
In the “Message” box:
Type or record a message to your instructor informing him/her that you have successfully accessed the course and have read the syllabus
Click the “Send” button
How to change your Password
From Canvas, click “Settings” button in the upper right portion of the screen
To the right of your screen, click, next to the pencil, “Edit Settings”
In the middle of the screen, below Time Zone, click in the check box “Change Password”
Enter “Old Password”
Enter “New Password”
Enter “Confirm Password”
Click “Update Settings”
