ESCC INTERIM PRESIDENT
DR. VICKY OHLSON
Dr. Vicky Ohlson currently serves as Interim President of Enterprise State Community College. Prior to her appointment to lead ESCC, she served as Director of Academic Affairs for the System Office of the Alabama Community College System. In all, Dr. Ohlson has more than 22 years of experience in postsecondary education, serving various System colleges as a math instructor, department chair, satellite campus coordinator, and director of distance education. She was selected as the Chancellor’s Award Nominee for the Outstanding Technical College Faculty of the Year Award by Patterson State Technical College in 1999 and 2000, and earned the Outstanding Work and Service Award at Trenholm State Community College in 2011.
Dr. Ohlson earned her PhD in mathematics from Auburn University where her studies focused on the field of discrete mathematics. Her PhD dissertation “Almost Resolvable Maximum Packings of Complete Bipartite Graphs with 4-Cycles” advanced the body of knowledge in mathematics known as combinatorial designs. Dr. Ohlson had previously earned a master’s degree in mathematics education from Troy University at Dothan, where she received the Outstanding Graduate Student in Mathematics Award. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics there, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She is a product of the state’s 2-year college system, having spent her first two years of postsecondary education at Enterprise State Community College. She is very excited to have returned to the college that provided her a solid academic foundation for continued university studies and a successful career in education.
Although Dr. Ohlson has a strong academic background, she has an equally strong background in career and technical education. Over the course of 21 years, she served at Sparks State Technical College (now the Sparks campus of Wallace Community College, Dothan), Patterson State Technical College in Montgomery, and Trenholm State Community College in Montgomery. During that time she worked closely with career/technical programs to align general education courses with career/technical curriculum. She served as chair of many program review committees which evaluated the effectiveness and viability of career/technical instructional programs and while employed at the System Office, led the Alabama Community College System’s development of a statewide standardized program review process scheduled for implementation in 2016.
Dr. Ohlson is married to Lt Col Richard Ohlson (retired, USAF). They have a mutual passion for music and play together in a cross-genre band that performs for free for church, civic, community, and charitable events. They are also members of First United Methodist Church in Millbrook, Alabama, and serve as volunteer musicians in the Church’s nursing home outreach ministry which provides Sunday communion services to residents of local nursing, rehabilitation, and assisted living facilities.
