Enterprise, AL – Five students nominated for top ESCC Student Honor ahead of Honor’s Day

A total of five students have qualified as nominees for Enterprise State Community College’s highest student honor, the President’s Cup. A finalist will be announced during the college’s Honor’s Day Ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, inside the ESCC Student Center.

The students who qualified for the nomination are Maggie Johnson, Haley Rose McInnis, Christie McLendon, Kayla Reese, and Cheyanna Husten-Mccrea. Their bios are included below.

A President’s Cup nominee is a private recommendation made by an ESCC faculty or staff member unknown to the potential candidates until Honor’s Day. Nominees must meet certain requirements, including 36 or more credit hours, a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and be enrolled as a full-time student at least one term during the current academic year. In addition, the student is not only required to be academically gifted, but also involved on the ESCC campus and in the local communities.

Other awards on Honor’s Day include the following: Excellence in Education Awards, All-Alabama Academic & Scholarships, National Society of Leadership and Success, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Awards, Scholars Bowl Team Awards, Alumnus of the Year, and ESCCEA Scholarship.

Information about the nominees for the President’s Cup include the following:

Maggie Johnson, Accounting major

GPA: 4.0

Maggie Johnson is currently an ESCC Presidential Scholar who has been on the President’s List – and taken a full load of courses – every semester at ESCC. Maggie has been accepted to both the University of Alabama and Troy University. She plans to continue her education after receiving her bachelor’s by completing her master’s and becoming a CPA. In addition to her curricular activities, Maggie is President of the Student Government Association and Vice President of the College Republicans at ESCC. She is also a member of ESCC’s Ambassadors and Diamond Dolls. She was also selected to attend the Student Leadership Institute the previous summer. The event is hosted by the Dean of Students Association. Maggie is also an active member of Elba First Assembly. She has participated in canned food drives, bake sales, and fundraisers for missionary trips. Maggie is an active volunteer with Speed the Light, as student-initiated volunteer program that helps missionaries across the world. Maggie has always been the first to volunteer to help with concessions when needed at campus activities and follows through with her commitments. She works at the Enterprise YMCA.

Haley Rose McInnis, English major

GPA: 3.919

Haley Rose McInnis is an All Alabama Academic Team member, past ESCC Academic Scholar, two-time President’s List and one-time Dean’s List student. In addition to her curricular activities, she is President of the Tau Mu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and of the Sigma Alpha Pi chapter of the National Society of Leadership & Success. She is also a member of the Alabama PTK region Outstanding Officer Team; a PTK Five Star Competitive Edge member, and recipient of the PTK Alabama region Hallmark award for Honors in Action Distinguished Theme. Haley is also President of the American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Unit 73; president of the American Legion Auxiliary Junior Members-Enterprise Cook Clements Unit 73; publicity chairman of the American Legion family: Legion Auxiliary, Sons, Riders; regional Americanism chairman of the American Legion Auxiliary; member of the Flag education program for Girl Scouts; Relay for Life volunteer; American Legion Poker Run volunteer; Friends of the Enterprise Library; female Veteran Appreciation Luncheon guest speaker; and was a Memorial Day celebration guest speaker for American Legion at Meadowlawn Gardens. She has participated in the following through PTK: blood drives; Luke’s Legacy; Quilts of Comfort; Day of Change for the Ronald McDonald House; DHR book drive; Dancing with the Stars and Masquerade Ball for the ESCC Foundation; and Day of Service at ESCC. Haley works as an ESCC SSS tutor.

Christie McLendon, Health Information Technology major

GPA: 3.88

Christie McLendon has been listed on ESCC’s President’s List since the Fall of 2017 and was on the Dean’s List in 2016. Christie is also a Student Support Services Grant Scholarship Recipient. In addition to her curricular activities, Christie is a Student Support Services Student Advisory Board Member, Spirit Club Volunteer, Concessions Volunteer, and Study Group Leader in the HIT program. Christie was also selected as a LEAD Conference Student Supervisor and volunteer coordinator. Christie is also a Socks of Love volunteer for SSS; Children’s Ministry leader, fundraising coordinator for Hardships and Medical Needs, coordinator of Missions Fundraising, and Sunday school teacher at Mt. Olive Assembly of God. She is also a camp counselor for Camp Pentecost and Hospice Volunteer. Christie works as an ESCC Library and SAS Lab Work Study.

Cheyanna Huston-McCrea, Education major

GPA: 3.6

Cheyanna Huston-McCrea was listed on the Dean’s List between Fall 2015 and Fall 2017. She was listed as Who’s Who of Two-Year College Students in the Spring of 2017. She has been consistently listed as a college honoree for a GPA of 3.5 and higher. In addition to her curricular activities, Cheyanna is president of Phi Theta Kappa, and has also served in other capacities for the honor society, including as Vice President of Fundraising, President of College Project, Alabama Regional President, and a Division II Candidate for International Officer. She is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and was President of World Perspectives in 2016. She received the PTK Vicente Cortez Spirit of Phi Theta Kappa Award in 2018, the Distinguished Officer Award in 2017, and the Distinguished Officer Team Award in 2018. Cheyanna writes the monthly newsletter for the Early Childhood Education Center, volunteers at the New Brockton Elementary School and with New Brockton Pageants, and is a volunteer for the food and pet supply drive for the SOS Animal Shelter. She has also volunteered time making quilts and selling socks for the Quilts for Comfort Organization, has assisted with reading proficiency at the Early Childhood Education Center, and has volunteered time for the Trike-a-thon and Fall Festival at EEEC. Cheyanna works as an ESCC Mathematics Work Study.

Kayla Reese, Music major

GPA: 3.62

Kayla Reese is an ESCC Academic scholar and was listed on the President’s List in Fall 2017. In addition to her curricular activities, she is Vice President of Circle K and has served as treasurer of Phi Beta Lambda. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa and has served as Secretary and Treasurer of Circle K. Kayla also serves in dining halls and passes out food at Church of Jesus Christ on various Sundays for different events involving the community. She plays the piano on Friday night and Sunday morning services for the Church of Jesus Christ. Kayla works at the City of Enterprise Parks & Recreation Department.

Enterprise, AL – Enterprise State Community College’s annual Founders Day is set from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the ESCC track area. This year’s events include relay races, dodge ball, karaoke, tug-of-war, sack races, and more organized by the college’s Founders Day Committee and Student Services.

Founders Day is an annual opportunity for students, faculty and staff to celebrate the college’s founding in 1963. The college first observed Founders Day in the early 1970s, according to Dr. Kevin Ammons, ESCC’s Associate Dean of Students/Athletic Director. At that time, the celebration happened between the last day of classes and finals in order for students to enjoy time with their instructors and ask any questions before the end of the semester. Founders Day later moved to the fall semester but returned to the spring semester in recent years.

Enterprise, AL – Enterprise State Community College’s Fine Arts Division will bring the entertaining and lovable musical, Annie, to life in April on stage at the Enterprise Civic Center.

Tickets are on sale now to view the exciting production Thursday through Saturday, April 5-7, 2018, Showtime is 7 p.m. each night. General admission tickets are $15 and ESCC student tickets are $5. Tickets can be purchased at the Enterprise State business office. The business office is located in Wallace Hall.

Annie centers on a young orphan girl who is taken from her orphanage and “the clutches of evil Miss Hannigan” to stay with billionaire Oliver Warbuck in his mansion for the holidays. When Annie wins the hearts of the billionaire and his staff, a mission ensues to find Annie’s parents. The story whirls around the attempts amid Miss Hannigan’s shenanigans to gain money out of the unique situation, drawing the lovable Annie’s unique situation into national spotlight.

ESCC Fine Arts students and members of the community are practicing around the clock to ensure the production meets the excellent standard set by ESCC performances year after year.

Enterprise, AL – Enterprise State Community College (ESCC) and Andrew College (AC) held a historic articulation agreement signing on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 on the beautiful ESCC campus.

The goal of the collaboration is to provide Associate of Applied Science (AAS) graduates of select ESCC programs with an opportunity to enroll at Andrew College and earn their bachelor’s degree. ESCC graduates in business administration, accounting, and management and supervision, will have the opportunity to transfer to Andrew College to earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Business Administration.

The articulation agreement becomes effective immediately and will provide transfer opportunities for students who want to enroll at Andrew College during the fall 2018 semester.

Enterprise State Community College students completing the degree programs, and who meet the appropriate admissions requirements to attend Andrew College, will be ensured that all courses in the agreement earned at ESCC will transfer. A minimum grade of “C” or above in certain core courses and any other courses designed by specific majors will be required in accordance with standard program requirements.

Instrumental in establishing this partnership is Jennifer Nelson, ESCC Business & Computer Science Division Chair. “We’re grateful to the faculty and staff of Andrew College for their desire to partner with ESCC on this articulation agreement and open new doors of opportunity for our students,” she said. “The landscape of education is constantly changing and it’s necessary to provide an innovative path that supports the continued educational growth of our students. Through this agreement, an advanced degree is more accessible for our students.”

Andrew College President Linda R. Buchanan expressed her gratitude to ESCC for facilitating this agreement and said, “We greatly value this partnership with such a fine institution and look forward to welcoming Enterprise’s students into our Bachelor of Business Administration degree program.”

ESCC President Matt Rodgers expressed a similar appreciation for the agreement. “Our partnership with Andrew College aligns with our mission to continually create opportunities for our community. We look forward to developing this relationship for the benefit of our programs and students,” he said.

Enterprise State Community College’s Student Government Association turned proceeds from a fun fall event into a beautification service project in the ESCC Quad.

SGA members spent Friday morning planting perennials in the quad area and laying down mulch. Participants included Kyle Kennington, Maggie Johnson, William Lindgren, Zahra Vance, Deja Craig, and Caroline Morgan. A total of $50 was raised at the SGA’s Womanless Beauty pageant held last semester.

Jennifer Olsen, ESCC’s SGA Advisor and Student Services Specialist, said the beautification project is one of many service projects SGA enjoys in the community.

“We want to make the campus beautification project an annual event for our college’s SGA,” she said.

Multiple schools participated in the Enterprise City Schools Annual Math Tournament on Enterprise State Community College’s campus on Friday, March 9. Students had the opportunity to compete in college classrooms inside the Wallace Administration Building. Students enjoyed lunch in the Student Center’s Multipurpose room, and spent time playing games on the college quad. The event was organized by Enterprise City Schools educator Gracie Rogers in collaboration with the college’s Dean of Students Office, Dean of Instruction Office, and Math Division.

The Enterprise State Community College Cerebral Weevils Scholars’ Bowl team ranked within the top 10 community college teams nationwide after the 2018 National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Community College Championship Tournament in Rosemont, IL. The tournament was held at the Hyatt Regional O’Hare on Thursday and Friday, March 2 and 3.

The Cerebral Weevils traveled to Chicago to compete with the top 24 community college quiz bowl teams from around the country. This year’s competition was exceptionally tough. Mike Johnson finished the tournament in 7th place in individual scores, while the Weevil team finished in 8th place. The team hailed wins over teams competing from community colleges in California, Georgia, Florida, and Kansas. The Weevils enjoyed a taste of Chicago while there, visiting The Bean, the Art Institute of Chicago, and eating the original deep-dish Chicago-style pizza from Giordano’s.

“Working with these students is an honor,” ESCC English Instructor and Scholars Bowl Advisor Kathy Pattie said.

“The breadth of knowledge that they possess speaks volumes to their intelligence and dedication to winning. I can’t think of a group that better represents ESCC and its core value of a quality education.”

The Cerebral Weevils Team consists of the following ESCC students: Troy Funk, Judson Bailey, John Morgan, Caroline Morgan, Mike Johnson and Gavin Wriston. The Cerebral Weevils’ fearless leader is Kathy Pattie, a veteran English instructor at the college.

It was a rebound that turned a hopeful victory into a loss for the Men’s Boll Weevils Basketball semifinals run two years ago.

On Saturday, March 3, 2018, it was Kainon Pouncey’s three-point shot with 1.7 seconds left in a game against Lawson State Community College that pushed the Boll Weevils toward Elite 8 play this Wednesday, March 7th at 7:00 pm. The score was 56-54 against Lawson State in the sweet 16 state tournament.

“It was a joyous day,” ESCC Head Basketball Coach Jeremaine Williams said.

“The pep talk into the game was that this was the ‘win or go home.’ A lot of the guys, this could have been their last time playing on the junior college level, so they could make it their last game, or they could win to play again. It was a hard fight, but our guys showed up and are pushing through to get to the state championship.

Xavier Smith led the Boll Weevils in scoring on Lawson State with 15 points. Pouncy followed close behind with 14 points, with Mathew Mazique scoring 12 points and Jordan Burrows hitting 11 points.

The Boll Weevils play their Elite 8 competition on the road in Birmingham on Wednesday against Coastal Alabama-North at 7 p.m. All games will be played at Lawson State.

The Boll Weevils record stands at 14-14.

“This is a good team that peaked late. I knew it was a real good team coming in. We just have to keep going and stay ready for battle. I have full confidence this team can bring home a victory.”

The Lady Boll Weevils lost their run in the state tournament action 95-65 against Southern Union.

Enterprise State Community College’s opportunity to host the regional Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society conference for the first time in 15 years was met with success for the nearly 200 students and advisors from around Alabama who attended.

Students experienced several educational and informational sessions to enhance their community college experiences and prepare them for the future, including information on resumes, social media etiquette, interviews, retirement planning, financial planning, and transfer scholarships. Many of the students stayed in hotels within Enterprise, providing an economic boost for the city.

Other events at the conference included PTK’s Hallmark Awards Presentations. ESCC’s Tau Mu chapter earned the 5-star ranking, which is the highest ranking a chapter can receive in PTK. Cheyanna Huston-McCrea, Haley Rose McInnis, and Kyle Smith, all from Enterprise, earned a 5-star Competitive Edge Award. The chapter also won our first ever Honors in Action theme award for our collaborative Christmas concert with the Fine Arts division. The chapter officer team won an officer team award. The team includes Cheyanna Huston-McCrea, Haley Rose McInnis, Kyle Smith, Debbie Devasure, Brannon Brown, all from Enterprise, and Deja Craig of Malvern, AL. Lastly, ESCC’s PTK chapter advisor and Math Instructor, Kristi Peters, won the distinguished chapter advisor award.

ESCC’s PTK even provided true southern hospitality by providing tours through downtown Enterprise and a history of the city and its Boll Weevil.

PTK’s advisor, ESCC Math instructor Kristi Peters, praised the conference opportunity and the participants in the regional event.

“As a Phi Theta Kappa member from ESCC and the Tau Mu chapter president 95-96 this brings me full circle,” she said.

“One of the most exciting factors was our former officers returning to help. We had six former officers here. I’m honored to have an international officer for Phi Theta Kappa at our convention as well. She is from Colorado and traveled in for the weekend.”
