ESCC Selected Among Top 10% in U.S. |
A new and innovative competition recognizing outstanding community colleges includes Enterprise State Community College among the 120 top two-year colleges in the nation. As one of the top colleges ESCC is eligible to compete for the Aspen Prize.
According to the Aspen Institute's website, ". . . . the purpose of the Aspen Prize is to recognize community colleges with outstanding academic and workforce outcomes in both absolute performance and improvements over time. By focusing on student successes and lifting up models that work, the Aspen Prize will honor excellence, stimulate innovation, and create benchmarks for measuring progress."
"It is an honor for the College to be recognized as one of the top two-year institutions in the nation," says Dr. Nancy Chandler, ESCC president. "This competition is an opportunity for ESCC to evaluate our successes and to become a greater community college."
By the end of this year, after three strenuous rounds of competition, a grand prize winner and a runner-up will be announced. The prize purse is $1,000,000.
"I am pleased and excited by the Aspen Prize for Community Colleges and hope that the award will point out that these institutions, which educate the most at-risk student body in higher education with the fewest resources, are often the most innovative and learning-centered," says George Boggs, president and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges.
More than 6,000,000 students are currently enrolled in America's 1,200 community colleges. A study by Georgetown University labor economists predict that there will be a shortfall of at least three million degree-holding workers by 2018. They also predict a shortfall of 4.7 million postsecondary certificate-holding workers.
"Our role is clear. Our goal, as always, remains: providing our students with an excellent education to prepare them for whatever field they plan to enter," says Dr. Chandler. "Being selected in the top 120 community colleges in the nation is a significant achievement of which we are very proud.
"It is also a testimony to the support we receive from the communities we serve across the state and to the College's integral role in enhancing the quality of life of our students as individuals and of our communities in general." |

Instructor Wins in Photography Competition |
Enterprise State Community College art and photography instructor, Lynn Ledbetter, won an Honorable Mention in the Santa Fe Photography Workshops competition for Spring 2011. The book, Light, featuring the artists and their winning photographs, was just issued.
Reid Callahan, director for the Santa Fe Photography Workshops and one of the judges commented in the book that 751 photographers from 29 countries entered 2,777 photographs in the competition.
Ledbetter's entry, entitled "Almost Home," was taken with an iPhone camera and was manipulated with applications. Using another application she transferred the image to her computer for resizing and uploading to the competition site.
"I feel honored to have placed in this competition," says Ledbetter. "I tell my Photo I students to constantly look at quality work and read photography publications, but, last year I also suggested they enter contests. I told them it would be a great way to jumpstart their creativity. I myself had never entered a contest. I entered the Santa Fe contests to practice what I teach."
The grand prize is free attendance at one of the workshops, which are quite expensive. The prizes run up to $13,000, and competitors enter three images for a $40.00 fee, with each additional entry for $10.00.
The other judges for the competition were Senior Picture Editor for National Geographic Images Collection Steve St. John, Photo Editor for Outside magazine Amy Feitelberle, and photographer Nevada Weir.
Ledbetter also won an Honorable Mention in "Family" in the first competition with the Workshops.
" The photo I submitted, 'Me, Christy, and Alyssa' was made for a self-portrait assignment for a Photography I class at the University of New Mexico in 1986. It was originally a silver gelatin print from a 35mm negative, and for the contest, I scanned the negative for digital submission.. Interestingly, the assignment is much the same as one I give my own Photography I students here at ESCC almost thirty years later."
For the first contest 702 photographers from 25 countries submitted 2,544 entries. Fifty winners were chosen.
The judges for the first competition were Anthony Bannon with George Eastman House, photographer Julie Blackmon, Deputy Photo Editor of People Magazine Brenna Britton, and Callahan.
For more information about the competition, go to www.santafeworkshops.com.
